School culture is another way to implement character education. Character Education Partnership CEP describes school culture as the school wide ethos and the culture of individual classrooms, high expectations for learning and achievement, a safe and caring environment, shared values and relational trust, a powerful pedagogy and curriculum, high student motivation and engagement, a professional faculty culture, and partnerships with families and the community. While Charles Elbot and David Fulton (2008) in their book Building an Intentional School Culture: Excellence in Academics and Character remind us of Harvard educator Roland Barth’s wise observation: “A school’s culture has far more influence on life and learning in the schoolhouse than the state department of education, the superintendent, the school board, or even the principal can ever have. It means that school culture influences students’ character strongly. School culture has important role in shaping the students character. The school culture that SMA 5 Purworejo fosters the core values which encourage academic excellence and ethics. The school culture promotes simple words to remember and to recall: 1. discipline, 2. excellence, 3. honesty, 4. contribution 5. networking These 5 core values are chosen to be the values strongly fostered, stated clearly in school wall and classroom beside the other core values integrated in curriculum and extracurricular program. The first core value is discipline. It encourages students, teachers and staff to obey the school rules and regulation. Students have to be discipline in attending the class, obeying the clothing standard like uniform, obeying the other regulation. Teachers and staff are discipline in teaching and working. The second is excellence encourages students to have high expextance, to make students have high N-Ach, need of achievement. Students who strive for excellence will have high motivation to learn and to study. The third is honesty. It fosters students to be trusted. Students learn to behave honesty so that every body trusts them. The forth core values in school culture is contribution. It includes 4 contributions, contribution of ideas, contribution of time, contribution of material, and contribution of care. Each member of school stake holder is invited to give contribution to school. School will not develop well without the participation and empowerment of each member. The implementation of school based management demands the participation from the school stake holder and the empowerment of what the school have like human resource, financial resources and natural resources. Schools have the authority to develop itself maximally based on its potential (Bulloc and Thomas, 1997). Good development is the development which can involve the member or the society (Ife, 2002). The core value contribution is inviting every students, teachers and staff to take part in developing the school toward the effective school they desire based on the vision of the school. The fifth core value is networking. One of the demands of twentieth century skills is having strong wide networking. By having networking with schools in Indonesia and abroad, SMA 5 Purworejo teaches students to learn different cultures so that they have cultural sensitivity which will help them later in their life. This implementation of character building does not cost certain fund separately. The fund needed for character education implementation is integrated in curriculum, from designing the curriculum, implementing it in the class, and evaluating. The fund needed is also integrated in extra curricular program and school activities.
